Burns Harbor is the most modern and efficient integrated steel plant in America
As a totally integrated plant, Burns Harbor controls every step of the steelmaking process from raw material sourcing through iron and steelmaking, slab production, plate–rolling and shipping. No outside products are brought in that could reduce quality or introduce contaminants. Special processes such as hot metal desulphurization, vacuum degassing and ladle treatments are also used to produce steel with superior cleanliness, formability and surface quality. Basic Oxygen Furnaces make quality steel with controlled chemistry. Slab and ingot production Continuous cast slabs are used for the majority of plate products. Ingots are poured for special applications, such as plates up to 15 inches thick, plus alloy and resulphurized grades.

Continuous caster produces internally clean slabs with highly consistent properties.

Environmentally ... Burns Harbor is what a steel plant should be

Bordered on two sides by a national park, Burns Harbor has proved that industry and nature can live in harmony. For example, Burns Harbor is so effective in treating the millions of gallons of water used at the plant each day that boating and fishing thrive in the stream through which the treated water passes on its way back to Lake Michigan. Burns Harbor also protects the air through the use of high-energy wet scrubbers and baghouses and has designed and constructed an innovative solid waste recycling system that significantly reduces landfill disposal. Burns Harbor is committed to improving and protecting the environment – now, and in the future. It’s a commitment without compromise.
