Bethlehem To Work With Clinton Administration On High Levels Of Imports

Bethlehem Steel Corporation
For Immediate Release

BETHLEHEM, Pa., October 27, 2000 - In response to media inquiries concerning the Clinton Administration's reply to a steel industry letter that focused on the resurgence of steel imports, the following response was issued by Duane R. Dunham, Bethlehem's chairman, president and chief executive officer:

"We are pleased by the promptness of the response by the Clinton Administration to the steel industry's letter, which I signed, concerning the tremendous injury being caused to the domestic industry by high levels of steel imports. We look forward to further discussions with the Administration to establish solutions to this crisis.

"Bethlehem has modernized its facilities to become a world-class competitor. We have invested hundreds of millions of dollars in the past three years to maintain our operational excellence and have, and will continue, to reduce our costs. These improvements are essential to Bethlehem's long-term success, as are timely and effective solutions by the Administration to the steel import crisis."
