The Hot-Rolled Products Division provides product and process
technology support for the production of hot-rolled sheet, plate, structural shapes, rail
and forgings. Within the product area, the work involves the development of new products
or improving existing products and providing technical assistance to our customers
to help them obtain the maximum value from our steel. The process area includes the
application of instrument systems to measure product quality and process phenomena for
process control, and the application of process models and process technology to achieve
improved product quality/consistency and increased yield/productivity.
A
technically sophisticated Scanning Transmission Electron Microscope (STEM) has played an
important role in Bethlehem's development of high-strength, low-alloy plate and sheet
products. The STEM provides magnifications up to ten-million times of particles that
control steel properties and its subsequent performance during finishing.(see photo above)
The Welding Laboratory includes a Robotic Spot Welding system which is used to evaluate
welding parameters for automotive applications.(see photo above)
The Division consists of the following three groups:
- Hot-Rolled Product Development conducting research and
development and providing technical support for hot-rolled sheet, plate and rail.
- Hot-Rolled Process Development performing research and
development of instrumentation and control systems and automated equipment that measures
in-process phenomena and finished product characteristics.
- Applications Technology providing technical assistance to
customers and other corporate groups to develop or maintain business for Bethlehem.
