C.H. Barnette Newsmaker of the Year by ENR

Bethlehem Steel Corporation
For Immediate Release

NEW YORK, N.Y., May 8, 2000 - Curtis H. Barnette, recently retired chairman and chief executive officer, Bethlehem Steel Corporation, was recognized as one of the Top 25 Newsmakers in the construction industry by Engineering News-Record (ENR), part of construction.com, the construction industry's leading business-to-business Internet destination.

Mr. Barnette and Bethlehem Steel were honored at the 35th annual ENR awards dinner at Chelsea Piers in New York City.

ENR recognized Bethlehem Steel and its leadership for transforming the site of its 1,800-acre former Bethlehem plant into two major developments that will create, at full buildout, about 10,000 jobs, generate $70 million in annual tax revenue and cause a public/private investment of more than $1 billion. About 160 acres comprise Bethlehem Works, a mixed-use complex of educational, recreational, cultural and retail venues anchored by the National Museum of Industrial History, an affiliate of the Smithsonian Institution. The remaining 1,600 acres comprise the Bethlehem Commerce Center for light industrial, distribution, transportation and warehousing businesses. The first major component, an intermodal rail yard operated by BethIntermodal, opened in summer 1999.

"This award gives ENR the opportunity to celebrate the inspirational and pioneering individuals who are top role models within our industry," said Howard Stussman, editor-in-chief for Engineering News-Record. "Barnette was selected as a top Newsmaker because his dedication and exceptional achievements are what will continue to move our industry ahead."

Each year, the editors of ENR review the significant contributions of construction industry members. Those designated for recognition are generally involved in some aspect of the industry including engineering, contracting and architecture.

Duane R. Dunham, Bethlehem's newly elected chairman, president and chief executive officer, said, "Bethlehem has been a leading supplier to the construction industry, and we take great pride in being recognized by ENR as part of such a prestigious group of honorees."

The Bethlehem Steel development projects were the subject of a cover story in ENR entitled Recycling Steel that appeared in November 1999.
