Thomas J. Conarty, Jr.

Bethlehem Steel Corporation

Thomas J. Conarty has been with Bethlehem Steel Corporation for about 26 years. Prior to joining Bethlehem, he was Plant Manager of a specialty chemical manufacturing facility that was a subsidiary of a major consumer products corporation. His background includes undergraduate and graduate training in Chemical and Mechanical Engineering at Lehigh University and Johns Hopkins. In 1990, he completed the Harvard Business Management Program. He also has completed management training at Pennsylvania State University, the University of Michigan and Duke University. Most recently, he graduated from the Advanced Management Program at the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania in 1999. He was elected Vice President and Chief Information Officer in October, 1999. In April, 2000 he was elected Senior Vice President and Chief Procurement and Information Officer with responsibilities for Procurement, Information Technology and Logistics.

After an initial period at Bethlehem Steel's Sparrows Point Division located in Baltimore, MD., the balance of Mr. Conarty's career has been spent at Corporate Headquarters in Bethlehem, PA where he has held several technical management responsibilities in various aspects of the primary steelmaking process. In this work he has been involved with design and implementation of many processes and process control systems (e.g., coke oven underfiring control, reheating furnace control and continuous caster control systems) as well as new technology programs such as formcoke, electric furnace dust disposal, direct ironmaking, thin slab casting and direct strip casting. He holds several patents, has authored numerous publications and has made many presentations in the areas of primary steelmaking, computer process control and raw materials selection and information technology.

Mr. Conarty is presently a very active member of a number of professional societies, including: American Chemical Society, Engineering Society of Detroit, Bethlehem Engineers' Club, Society for Information Management, Association for Systems Management and the Iron and Steel Society of AIME. His work with the Iron and Steel Society has included service on the Ironmaking Executive Committee, membership on the Program Committee for many years, organization of special conferences (e.g., Artificial Intelligence in the Steel Industry) and chairmanship of numerous sessions and sub-committees. In addition he is a member of the Asa Packer Society of Lehigh University and a member of the Executive Committee of the Board of the Diamond Center for Economic Education.

Currently, Mr. Conarty is a Founder and President of the International Information Technology Users Group, a group of large users of informational technology services whose combined purchasing power exceeds $70 billion. He is also a member of the Board of Directors of MetalSite, the leading business-to-business, electronic marketplace in the metals industry. In addition, he is the immediate past chairman of the Information Systems Management Council of the Manufacturers Alliance, having also served as Vice-Chairman for two years. He continues to be an active participant on the Governor's Corporate Advisory Group for Information Technology in the state of Pennsylvania. He also serves as Key Reader on the Advisory Board of the Transactions of the Iron and Steel Society, a refereed journal.
