BETHLEHEM, Pa., September 30, 2002-Bethlehem Steel Corporation, a charter member of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA) Climate Leaders Program, announced a voluntary target reduction of 12 percent for greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions for the 10-year time period of 2000 to 2010. The announcement was made today at an event recognizing the six-month anniversary of EPA's Climate Leaders Program in Chicago, Ill.
"Since joining the Climate Leaders program in February 2002, Bethlehem has completed an inventory of GHG emissions and has worked with the EPA to establish an aggressive target for reductions over the next five to 10 years," said David E. Tomlinson, Bethlehem's general manager of safety, health and environment. "Voluntary reduction of greenhouse gas emissions is a key part of the Administration's climate change policy and is a natural extension of Bethlehem Steel's efforts in environmental stewardship," he continued.
Climate Leaders include a diverse range of energy-intensive and service-oriented companies, including Bethlehem Steel Corporation, El Paso Energy Corporation, FPL Group, General Motors Corporation, Holcim (US) Inc., Interface Inc., Lockheed Martin Corporation, Miller Brewing Company, Norm Thompson Outfitters, and S.C. Johnson & Son, Inc.
