For Immediate Release
BETHLEHEM, Pa., May 2, 2002 - In response to media inquiries concerning the introduction of the Steel Industry Legacy Relief Act of 2002 by Congressmen John Dingell (D-Mich.), Ray LaHood (D-Ill.) and Pete Visclosky (D-Ind.), the following statement was released by Bethlehem Steel Corporation:
"Bethlehem has been advocating for consolidation of the domestic steel industry as a way to improve its international competitiveness. The single largest barrier to consolidation has been, and continues to be, the overwhelming costs associated with retiree health insurance.
"The bill introduced by the Congressmen supports Bethlehem's overriding objective of promoting consolidation in the steel industry by ensuring a reasonable level of health care coverage for retirees. This bill is very similar to S. 2189 introduced in the U.S. Senate by Senator Jay Rockefeller.
"The two bills have some differences in their approach to various issues. During the next few months, Bethlehem will actively work with the offices of Senator Rockefeller and Congressmen Dingell, LaHood and Visclosky to help ensure legislation is enacted to solve the legacy/consolidation problem."
