    For Immediate Release

BURNS HARBOR, Ind., March 21, 2002 - Achieving ISO 14001 registration of the Burns Harbor Division's environmental management system earned a cross-functional team of employees the corporate Excellence in Environmental Achievement Award. The award, presented to the team during an award ceremony by Robert S. Miller Jr., Bethlehem Steel Corporation's chairman and chief executive officer, is the corporation's highest form of recognition for significant contributions toward Bethlehem's environmental performance.

The cross-functional team comprised of representatives from operating, services and corporate departments undertook an eighteen-month process to ensure the Division's environmental management system would meet the stringent requirements of the ISO 14001 international standard. ISO 14001 requires an environmental management system that manages significant aspects through continual improvement of overall environmental performance. Registration was granted October 31, 2001, after undergoing comprehensive audits by an independent registrar.

The award winning team selected the Indiana Dunes Environmental Learning Center to be the recipient of the $1500 grant from the Bethlehem Steel Foundation that accompanies the award.
