BETHLEHEM, Pa., March 14, 2002 - Bethlehem Steel has been recognized as a Charter Member of the Climate Leaders Program of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).
Under the new partnership, Bethlehem will work with EPA to develop a corporate-wide greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions inventory, set a long range corporate target to reducing GHG and report progress against goal annually.
EPA Administrator Christie Whitman applauded the leadership shown by Bethlehem and other charter members in Climate Leaders. "The companies that participate in this program -- promising to meet a higher standard than other companies in their sector -- are showing true leadership as environmental stewards," said Whitman. "They are providing that doing what is good for the environment, is also good for business. They are providing an example to everyone that we all must do our share to address the effects of climate change -- and we must start now, as they have."
David E. Tomlinson, Bethlehem's General Manager of Safety, Health and Environment, views the company's participation in the Climate Leader Initiative as a natural extension of Bethlehem's ongoing efforts in environmental stewardship. "Bethlehem is honored to be recognized with other leaders in this effort to reduce greenhouse gas. Bethlehem joined the Climate Wise Program in 1998, making it the first integrated steel company to step up in support of this nationwide effort to reduce energy consumption and improve the environment" he said.
Climate Leaders include a diverse range of energy-intensive and service-oriented companies, including Bethlehem Steel Corporation, El Paso Energy Corporation, FPL Group, General Motors Corporation, Holcim (US) Inc., Interface Inc., Lockheed Martin Corporation, Miller Brewing Company, Norm Thompson Outfitters, and S.C. Johnson & Son, Inc.
