Pennsylvania Governor Schweiker Appoints President of Bethlehem Steel
Subsidiary Railroads to State Advisory Post

    BETHLEHEM, Pa., July 11, 2002 - J. Michael Zaia, president of Bethlehem Steel's subsidiary railroads and general manager, transportation and logistics, has been appointed to the Pennsylvania Rail Freight Advisory Committee (RFAC) by Governor Mark S. Schweiker.

    The three-year appointment is effective March 27, 2002 and represents Mr. Zaia's third consecutive term on the committee since his first appointment in 1996. The Rail Freight Advisory Committee provides guidance on rail freight related issues to the governor, secretary of transportation, members of the State Transportation Commission and the General Assembly.

    A native of Allentown, Pa., Mr. Zaia received a bachelor of science degree in electrical engineering from Villanova University in 1965. In addition, he completed the Advanced Management Program at the University of Pennsylvania Wharton School in 1998.

    A registered professional engineer, Mr. Zaia joined Bethlehem Steel Corporation in 1965. During his career, he has served as vice president, operations, at Pennsylvania Steel Technologies in Steelton, Pa., and as vice president, operations, at Bethlehem Steel's former Structural Products Division in Bethlehem, Pa. In 1994, Mr. Zaia was named president of Bethlehem Steel's subsidiary railroads and in 2001 assumed additional responsibilities as general manager, transportation and logistics.

    In addition to the RFAC, Mr. Zaia's other professional affiliations include the American Short Line and Regional Railroad Association board of directors and safety committee; Keystone State Railroad Association board of directors and executive committee; Intermodal Association of North America; Association of Iron and Steel Engineers; Association of American Railroads; Traffic Club of Philadelphia; Traffic Club of New York, Inc.; and the Traffic Club of the Lehigh Valley.

    Mr. Zaia and his wife, Marie, reside in Lower Saucon Township, Pa., and are the parents of four grown children.
