BURNS HARBOR, Ind., January 14, 2002 - In response to media inquiries concerning the confirmation of a fire at Bethlehem Steel Corporation Burns Harbor, Ind., Division the following statement is provided:
On January 13, 2002, at approximately 4:40 p.m. the Burns Harbor Division Fire Department responded to a fire call at the 80-inch Hot Strip Mill. The fire was contained at the area of origin, the #3 reheat furnace, and was extinguished at approximately 5:30 p.m. At the time of the incident, the mill was scheduled down for maintenance. There were no injuries and the incident is under investigation. The #3 reheat furnace sustained electrical and mechanical damage, which is being repaired. The 80-inch Hot Strip Mill will resume operation today, as scheduled, and will operate at reduced capability until repairs are completed in about a week.
In accordance with the Division's standard procedures, the Burns Harbor, Chesterton, Porter and South Haven Fire Departments were called to provide mutual aid.
