BETHLEHEM, Pa., December 12, 2002 -- Robert J. Jones, vice president, operations services, Bethlehem Steel Corporation, has been appointed vice president, manufacturing and chief manufacturing officer.
In his new position, Mr. Jones will be responsible for all manufacturing facilities, including operations, transportation and environmental activities. He will also accelerate restructuring actions throughout the corporation and will become part of the leadership team responsible for a new labor agreement with the United Steelworkers of America.
A native of Johnstown, Pa., Mr. Jones holds a bachelor of engineering degree in mechanical engineering from Villanova University and attended the Stanford University Executive Program in 1995. He began his Bethlehem career in 1966 in steelmaking positions in Johnstown and Bethlehem, Pa., before moving to the Sparrows Point, Md., Division in 1983 where he was superintendent of steelmaking and later of the cold sheet mill, playing a lead role in the development of that new facility. Mr. Jones then worked as vice president, operations, at Pennsylvania Steel Technologies in 1998 and then moved in the same position to Burns Harbor, Ind., in 2000. He was named vice president, operations services, in Bethlehem's corporate offices in late 2001.
Professionally, Mr. Jones has been active in the Iron and Steel Society and the American Iron and Steel Institute.
A resident of Bethlehem, he is married and the father of three children.
