For Immediate Release
BETHLEHEM, Pa., August 22, 2002 - In response to media inquiries concerning today's tariff exclusions announced by the U.S. Department of Commerce, the following statement was released:
"Bethlehem Steel is particularly troubled by the exclusions granted to a grade of plate made at our Coatesville, Pa., facility and several tin plate products made at our Sparrows Point, Md., Division. Bethlehem had hoped that the exclusions would not be granted for products for which there is ample supply in the United States. These particular exclusions are counterproductive to the original aim of the President's program - that being to provide breathing space for the industry to restructure and consolidate following years of unfairly traded imports flooding our shores.
"Now that this initial round of exclusions has concluded, Bethlehem is hopeful that additional monitoring provisions will be implemented to ensure that steel imports are fairly traded. We urge the Administration to implement an effective import licensing system and mechanism to limit surges. We also urge the Administration to not grant exclusions in the future to products that are available from domestic steelmakers, which, we believe, is an essential premise of a successful steel trade program.
"The industry is working to restructure and reinvent itself. At Bethlehem, we know that the tariffs should provide relief, and we are strengthening our company while we pursue restructuring opportunities. Our internal efforts include negotiating a new labor contract, significantly reducing legacy costs and reorganizing our company to become leaner and more competitive.
'Bethlehem appreciates the intent of the President's steel tariff program and hopes that its benefits are not lost through unwarranted exclusions."
