    For Immediate Release

BETHLEHEM, Pa., August 14, 2002 - In response to media inquiries concerning the health of Robert S. Miller, chairman and chief executive officer, Bethlehem Steel Corporation, the following statement was issued:

"Mr. Miller, 60, was recently diagnosed with a very early and treatable form of prostate cancer. He and his physician are in the process of evaluating the most appropriate treatment. They expect to make that decision later this month and begin treatment soon thereafter. Mr. Miller is otherwise in excellent health.

Based on the selected treatment protocol, Mr. Miller may revise some of his external and travel commitments. However, he will remain Chairman and CEO of Bethlehem Steel until the corporation is on stable ground, which includes restructuring Bethlehem's legacy obligations and negotiating a new, more flexible contract with the United Steelworkers of America. Mr. Miller will remain active in the strategic and daily affairs of the corporation during his treatment and recuperation.

Mr. Miller's prostate cancer was discovered during a routine physical exam. He urges all men age 50 and older to have yearly prostate health screenings, which can diagnose abnormalities, including cancer, when most easily and successfully treated."
