BETHLEHEM, Pa., April 3, 2002 - A team from Bethlehem Steel's Sparrows Point Division, located near Baltimore, Md., received Bethlehem's Excellence in Environmental Achievement Award for 2001.
The award, which was first presented in 1995, is the corporation's highest form of recognition for facilities, teams and individuals who have helped the corporation achieve its environmental objectives.
Sparrows Point's basic oxygen furnace (BOF) gas cleaning control team received the award for modifying the BOF gas cleaning scrubber to reduce stack particulate emissions to below state air quality limits without reduction in performance of the scrubber or in capture of emissions. The team included 15 people from Sparrows Point's slab group and safety, health and environment department as well as the division's onsite environmental consultant.
The award-winning team selected the Sparrows Point Educational Center in Environmental Studies (SPECIES) to receive a $1,500 grant from the Bethlehem Steel Foundation that accompanies the award. Located at the Sparrows Point High School, SPECIES offers students an instructional program rich in environmental studies oriented toward academic excellence.
Bethlehem Steel has a long history of environmental protection, having established a formal program back in 1946. Bethlehem was among the first manufacturing companies in the world to recognize the importance of protecting both its employees and the environment.
Today, Bethlehem is one of only 60 companies, and the only steelmaker, to have endorsed the 10 principles of corporate environmental responsibility and stewardship originated by the Coalition for Environmentally Responsible Economies (CERES). Bethlehem endorsed the CERES principles in 1995. The relationship among CERES partners has become the foundation of Bethlehem's environmental programs.
