For Immediate Release
BETHLEHEM, Pa., April 3, 2002 - A team from Pennsylvania Steel Technologies (PST) Operations in Steelton recently received Bethlehem's Excellence in Environmental Achievement Award for 2001. The award, which was first presented in 1995, is the corporation's highest form of recognition for facilities, teams and individuals who have made significant contributions toward helping the corporation achieve its environmental goals.
The PST Steelmaking Refractory Recycling Team received the award for its efforts in working with one of PST's raw materials suppliers to recycle used refractories in the steelmaking process, replacing dolomitic lime and thereby reducing the amount of waste going to landfills. The team's efforts resulted in more than 1,600 tons of refractory being recycled and reduced costs for off-site transportation and disposal.
The award-winning team selected the Capital Area Greenbelt Association, located in Harrisburg, Pa., to receive the $1,500 grant from the Bethlehem Steel Foundation that accompanies the award. The Association is a non-profit organization of active volunteers committed to the completion and continued maintenance of the Greenbelt, which, when completed, will be a 20-mile-long trail around Harrisburg linking parks and open spaces.
Bethlehem Steel has a long history of environmental protection, having established a formal program back in 1946. Bethlehem was among the first manufacturing companies in the world to recognize the importance of protecting both its employees and the environment.
Today, Bethlehem is one of only 60 companies, and the only steelmaker, to have endorsed the 10 principles of corporate environmental responsibility and stewardship originated by the Coalition for Environmentally Responsible Economies (CERES). Bethlehem endorsed the CERES principles in 1995. The relationship among CERES partners has become the foundation of Bethlehem's environmental programs.
