BethIntermodal Earns ISO 9002 Certification for Transportation Services

    BETHLEHEM, Pa., April 24, 2002--- BethIntermodal LLC, a subsidiary transportation company of Bethlehem Steel Corporation, has received ISO 9002 certification in recognition of the quality transportation services the company provides customers throughout the northeastern United States.

    BethIntermodal, LLC manages and markets rail, truck, transload, storage, and forward logistics of nine subsidiary companies with operations in Burns Harbor, Ind., Sparrows Point, Md., Chambersburg, Coatesville, Conshohocken, Johnstown, and Steelton, Pa. In addition, BethIntermodal operates an intermodal terminal, owned by Bethlehem Steel, on a 60 acre site in Bethlehem, Pa. Intermodal is the use of two or more modes of transportation in the movement of freight. BethIntermodal has recently extended its reach by providing contract rail switching services for private industries and government facilities.

They work hard to provide those quality services safely to a variety of customers at numerous locations, carefully matching specific customer requirements to service execution," said J. Michael Zaia, president of Bethlehem's subsidiary railroads with headquarters in Bethlehem, Pa.

    "This certification involved a rigorous examination of our management system and is proof of the quality of procedures implemented. It demonstrates our commitment to quality service that has further enhanced our relationships with our customers," he said.

    BethIntermodal LLC joins other subsidiary railroad companies that have earned ISO 9002 certification. Those subsidiaries include the Patapsco and Back Rivers Railroad, which services the Sparrows Point, Md., the Philadelphia, Bethlehem and New England Railroad serving the Bethlehem Commerce Center in Bethlehem, Pa., and Carrier Express, a trucking company operating in the United States and Canada.

    BethIntermodal also serves as the marketing arm for 10 other subsidiary railroad companies with operations in Burns Harbor, Ind., Sparrows Point, Md., Bethlehem, Chambersburg, Coatesville, Conshohocken, Johnstown and Steelton, Pa.

    BethIntermodal was established in 1988 to create business opportunities at each of the subsidiary railroads located in Pennsylvania, Maryland and Indiana. BethIntermodal offers over 100 years of expertise in the transportation business and has won many national awards including Railway Age magazine's Shortline Railroad of the Year Award, the American Shortline and Regional Railroad Association's Shortline Marketing Award and numerous Harriman Safety Awards.
