For Immediate Release
BETHLEHEM, Pa., October 4, 2001 - Bethlehem Steel Corporation has been recognized by Information Week magazine for innovation in information technology.
Bethlehem was ranked 70th in the listing of the top 500 firms nationwide that were evaluated for their technological, procedural and organizational innovation in information technology. Listed in the metals and natural resources category, Bethlehem was ranked significantly higher than any other metals company.
"This ranking validates our long-held belief that Bethlehem has wisely invested in the information technology needed to achieve operational excellence," said Thomas J. Conarty, senior vice president and chief information officer. "The strength of our performance in this listing is evidence of Bethlehem's strong information technology support of our facilities."
The survey evaluated four key areas of information technology performance -- technology strategy, customer knowledge, e-Business strategy and business practices. Only companies based in the United States with minimum annual revenue of $1 billion were considered.
Information Week, with circulation of 350,000 copies, is the nation's leading source of news and trends affecting users and providers of information technology. Bethlehem Steel Corporation is the nation's second largest fully integrated steel producer with 13,300 employees working primarily in three major divisions - Burns Harbor, Ind., Sparrows Point, Md. (with plate mills in Coatesville and Conshohocken, Pa.), and Pennsylvania Steel Technologies, Steelton, Pa.
