BETHLEHEM, Pa., November 14, 2001 -- The subsidiary railroads of Bethlehem Steel Corporation have been recognized for outstanding safety performance by the American Short Line and Regional Railroad Association (ASLRRA).
The Patapsco & Back Rivers Railroad received the top honor, the gold award, in the category for 501,000 hours or more of work. The P&BR; provides switching and terminal services at Bethlehem's Sparrows Point, Md., Division near Baltimore.
"Bethlehem's subsidiary railroads have consistently been among the safest short line railroads in the country," said J. Michael Zaia, president, subsidiary railroads, Bethlehem Steel. "Our safety performance speaks to our embracing safety as a core value and way of life. I'm extremely proud of what our employees have accomplished."
Also honored by the ASLRRA were the Conemaugh & Black Lick Railroad, Lake Michigan & Indiana Railroad, the Philadelphia, Bethlehem & New England Railroad, and the Upper Merion & Plymouth Railroad for working in 1998 with no accidents or injuries. The C&BL; provides switching and terminal services to customers on the site of Bethlehem Steel's former Johnstown, Pa., property. The PB≠ serves customers at Bethlehem Steel's Bethlehem, Pa. property. The Lake Michigan & Indiana Railroad serves Bethlehem Steel's Burns Harbor plant. The Upper Merion & Plymouth Railroad serves Bethlehem Steel's Conshohocken facility.
Bethlehem Steel Corporation owns eight shortline railroads that perform switching and terminal services for its operations in Indiana, Maryland, and Pennsylvania. The railroads have expanded their services to include intermodal facilities in strategic locations, including a terminal in Bethlehem, Pa., being used by Norfolk Southern for intermodal and Triplecrown customers.
