    For Immediate Release

January 5, 2001, Lehigh Valley, Pa - The Lehigh Valley Economic Development Corporation has received the Business Facilities' Gold level award in the Corporate Citizenship Award category on behalf of Bethlehem Works and Bethlehem Commerce Center developments being led by Bethlehem Steel Corporation.

The first-place award, which judges a project on the basis of innovation, effectiveness and the pro-business impact, honors companies that have actively and measurably participated in a regional development effort. Bethlehem Works and Bethlehem Commerce Center were nominated by LVEDC, which submitted the award on their behalf.

Business Facilities' Annual Achievement Award program is a national competition that brings recognition to an elite group of progressive leaders, benchmarks their achievements and sets the standard by which others follow. Business Facilities' editors, along with a panel of site selectors, judged the entries.

Donna Clapp, editor of Business Facilities Magazine, congratulated LVEDC and Bethlehem Steel by saying, "The Bethlehem Commerce Center and Bethlehem Works Community Revitalization Plan truly captures how a public-private partnership can innovatively improve an entire community."

Duane R. Dunham, chairman, president and chief executive officer, Bethlehem Steel Corporation, said, "Bethlehem Steel is proud of its past contributions to our namesake city and very proud of this first place award for this project that will contribute significantly to the course of the City's future. "Leading the creation of a public/private partnership is our commitment to the future of the City of Bethlehem and the entire Lehigh Valley region. Good citizenship is a principal objective of Bethlehem Steel, and nowhere is it better illustrated than here at Bethlehem Works and Bethlehem Commerce Center in Bethlehem, Pa."

Last year, LVEDC received honorable mention in the Regional Economic Development Incentive program category. In addition to being an award recipient, LVEDC and Bethlehem Works and Bethlehem Commerce Center are among a list of winners honored in the December issue of Business Facilities.

Web sites for the projects are www.bethlehemworks.com and www.bethcommercecenter.com.

As a private, non-profit corporation, LVEDC is a regional economic development marketing organization, offering businesses and industries one unified source for information about the Lehigh Valley. Through award-winning publications, like Business Facilities, the LVEDC communicates the many benefits of the Lehigh Valley region to businesses looking to expand and/or relocate.

Bethlehem Steel Corporation is the nation's second-largest fully integrated steel company with revenues of about $4 billion and shipments of nine million tons of steel products. Bethlehem's 14,500 employees work primarily in three major divisions -- Burns Harbor, Ind.; Sparrows Point, Md. (with plate mills in Coatesville and Conshohocken, Pa.); and Pennsylvania Steel Technologies, Steelton, Pa. The corporation is a leading supplier to North American automotive industry and construction industries, and is the largest supplier of plate products on the continent.
