BETHLEHEM, Pa., August 23, 2001 - In response to media inquiries concerning layoffs of hourly represented employees at Bethlehem Steel Corporation's Burns Harbor Division, the following information was provided:
Bethlehem Steel Corporation confirmed today that about 175 hourly represented employees at the corporation's Burns Harbor Division in Burns Harbor, Indiana were notified they would be temporarily laid off effective the week of August 26, 2001. This action will affect most operating areas at the division.
"We have taken this action as a necessary step to further reduce costs and improve our financial performance as we continue to manage through this very difficult steel market," said Duane R. Dunham, Bethlehem Steel chairman, president and chief executive officer. Mr. Dunham pointed out that Bethlehem has reduced its salaried, non-represented workforce by 30% since 1999, including an 11% reduction of its salaried, non-represented workforce since May 2001. Bethlehem's total workforce has been reduced by 18% since 1999.#
