Bethlehem Steel Corporation
For Immediate Release
BETHLEHEM, Pa.,October 25, 2000 - Restoration efforts at Bethlehem Steel Corporation's Sparrows Point, Md., Division to return a building to commercial use have earned a cross-functional team of employees a corporate Excellence in Environmental Achievement Award.
The award, presented earlier this week by Duane R. Dunham, Bethlehem's chairman, president and chief executive officer, during the corporation's annual Environmental Achievement Award ceremony, is the highest form of recognition for significant contributions toward Bethlehem's environmental performance.
The Sparrows Point team received a $2,500 grant from the Bethlehem Steel Foundation for donation to an organization that helps improve the environment and the well being of the community. The team donated its grant to the Patapsco High School and Center for the Arts, Southeastern District, Baltimore County, Md., for environmental education.
The Sparrows Point Division changed its process for plating tin mill products to no longer create 1,000 tons of sludge annually. In view of the permanent process change, employees were charged with restoring the building that formerly contained the sludge as it dried. They cleaned and removed all equipment, scraped and cleaned all building surfaces and sealed the foundation. As a result, the Maryland Department of the Environment approved the restoration and subsequent sale of the building, which has been returned to commercial use.
In addition to the Sparrows Point Division team members, support for the restoration project was received from C.J. Langenfelder & Son, Inc.; Environmental Resources Management, Inc., and Venable Baetjier & Howard.
