Bethlehem Steel to Record $10 Million Charge In 3rd Quarter for Fire at Coatesville

    BETHLEHEM, Pa., October 6, 2000 - Bethlehem Steel Corporation announced today that it will record a $10 million charge in the third quarter of this year for the cost of replacement parts and equipment that were destroyed in a fire that occurred at its Coatesville, Pa. steelmaking facility on September 30. As previously reported, the fire substantially damaged a storage building where spare parts and equipment for the electric furnace meltshop were stored. The fire did not affect production and there were no injuries. The cause of the fire is under investigation.

    Bethlehem Steel will report its third quarter, 2000 results on October 25.
