BETHLEHEM, Pa., November 14, 2000 - Robert A. Richard has been named vice president, operations and process improvement, at Bethlehem Steel Corporation's Sparrows Point, Md., Division.
Mr. Richard's appointment was announced by Duane R. Dunham, Bethlehem Steel's chairman, president and chief executive officer, who said:
"Bob brings to Bethlehem an excellent background in operations and process engineering, having worked in those capacities at both General Electric and Van Leer. He has a wealth of knowledge and first-hand experience regarding the Six Sigma quality improvement process and an outsider's view of manufacturing that will greatly benefit Sparrows Point and all of Bethlehem Steel."
Mr. Richard is joining Bethlehem from a senior executive position at GE LEXAN, a $1.2-billion plastics resin and compounding business with manufacturing plants in three states. At Sparrows Point, Mr. Richard will report to Van R. Reiner, president of the division.
A native of Westlake, Ohio, Mr. Richard holds bachelor of science and master of science degrees in chemical engineering from Ohio State University. Following receipt of his master's degree, he began his career with General Electric and spent 15 years in key management positions involving all facets of business, including safety, health, environment, manufacturing, engineering, quality, supply chain management and process improvement. He also worked briefly for Van Leer Packaging Worldwide, where he was responsible for plant site operations.
While at GE, Mr. Richard became an expert in quality improvement techniques through the Six Sigma process. He is a recognized leader for quality improvement and associated results in the nation's manufacturing sector, earning him the coveted Six Sigma Master Black Belt.
Over the years, Mr. Richard has been active in both Scouting and United Way campaigns in his communities.
He and his wife, Cathy, are the parents of two children. The family, which currently resides in Evansville, Ind., will relocate to the Baltimore area.
