MUNICH, Germany, May 22, 2000 - For the fifth consecutive year, Bethlehem Steel Corporation has been named a General Motors Supplier of the Year, making Bethlehem the only steelmaker in the world to win the award five consecutive times.

Duane R. Dunham, chairman, president and chief executive officer, and Curtis H. Barnette, chairman emeritus, accepted the 1999 Supplier of the Year award from General Motors Corporation during ceremonies at the historic PrinzRegenten Theater in Munich, Germany. The prestigious award, celebrating its eighth year, is given annually to GM's best global suppliers in recognition of their superior performance during the previous calendar year.

Bethlehem is one of only two domestic steel suppliers to be named a 1999 Supplier of the Year.

Kutner, group vice president, Worldwide Purchasing and North American Production Control & Logistics, who hosted the event. "As a recipient for five consecutive years, Bethlehem is truly a partner in advancing General Motors throughout the world. Bethlehem's contributions to General Motors' overall success are immeasurable. We look upon the Supplier of the Year award as an important recognition of their value as an automotive industry supplier."

The GM Supplier of the Year award began as a global program in 1992. Award winners are selected by a global team of executives from purchasing, engineering, manufacturing and logistics who base their decisions on supplier performance in Quality, Service, Technology and Price. This year, General Motors honored 181 suppliers from 22 countries for their excellence throughout 1999.

Bethlehem will celebrate the 1999 award with its employees, area GM dealers, and government and community leaders at events scheduled for June 8 at the steelmaker's corporate and technology headquarters in Bethlehem, Pa., and on June 9 at Bethlehem's steel-producing and finishing facilities in Burns Harbor, Ind., and Lackawanna, N.Y.
