Thomas J. Conarty, Jr. elected to senior vice president, procurement, information technology, and logistics

    BETHLEHEM, Pa., March 17, 2000 - The election, effective April 1, 2000, of Thomas J. Conarty, Jr. to senior vice president, procurement, information technology, and logistics was announced today by Curtis H. Barnette, chairman and chief executive officer. Mr. Conarty is advancing from his current position as vice president, information technology, and chief information officer. He will report to Duane R. Dunham, president and chief operating officer, whose election to chairman, president, and chief executive officer will become effective on April 25, 2000.

    A native of Packerton, Pa., Mr. Conarty received a bachelor of science degree in chemical engineering from Lehigh University in 1971 and completed the Harvard University Business Management Program in 1990. He graduated from the Advanced Management Program at the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania in 1999.

    Prior to joining Bethlehem in 1974, he was a plant manager of a specialty chemical manufacturing company. Mr. Conarty first worked at Bethlehem Steel�s Sparrows Point Division near Baltimore, Md., before being assigned to Bethlehem�s research department where he had technical management responsibility for various aspects of the primary steelmaking process. He was appointed to director, information technology, in 1993, and he was elected to his current position in October 1999.

    Mr. Conarty holds several patents and has authored a number of technical papers and presentations in the areas of primary steelmaking, computer process control, raw materials selection, and information technology.

    He is a member of the American Chemical Society, the Engineering Society of Detroit, Bethlehem Engineers� Club, Society for Information Management, the Association for Systems Management and the Iron and Steel Society of AIME.

    Mr. Conarty is also a member of the Asa Packer Society of Lehigh University and a board member of its Diamond Center for Economic Education. He is a member of the board of directors of MetalSite, an industry leader in business-to-business electronic commerce. He is a founder and president of the International Information Technology Users Group and is the immediate past chairman of the Information Systems Management Council of The Manufacturers Alliance. Mr. Conarty is a participant on the Pennsylvania Governor�s Corporate Advisory Group for Information Technology and also serves as a Key Reader on the Advisory Board of the Transactions of the Iron and Steel Society, a refereed journal.

    Mr. Conarty resides in Lehighton, Pa.
