Van Reiner to Lead Sparrows Point; Carl Johnson to retire

    BETHLEHEM, Pa., June 21, 2000 -- Carl W. Johnson, president of Bethlehem Steel Corporation's Sparrows Point, Md., Division will retire July 31 and will be succeeded by Van R. Reiner, it was announced today by Duane R. Dunham, Bethlehem's chairman, president and chief executive officer.

    Mr. Dunham recognized Mr. Johnson as "an effective leader in every management position he has held." Further, he credited Mr. Johnson for leading the Sparrows Point Division "through an ambitious modernization program, which when completed later this year, will position Sparrows Point to be the leading supplier in the markets it serves by offering superior value and unparalleled reliability to our customers." Mr. Johnson is completing 37 years of company service.

    Mr. Reiner, currently president of Bethlehem Lukens Plate with headquarters in Coatesville, Pa., will succeed Mr. Johnson on August 1. Mr. Reiner has led the transition team responsible for integrating BLP into the Sparrows Point Division.

    Carl W. Johnson

    A native of Springfield, Mass., Mr. Johnson earned a bachelor of science degree in mechanical engineering from the University of Massachusetts. He joined Bethlehem Steel in 1963 as a member of that year's management training program and was assigned to the Lackawanna, N.Y., plant.

    Initially employed in the mechanical department of the plant's hot strip mill, he advanced to master mechanic in that operation before being named assistant superintendent of the plant's mechanical department in 1976.

    n 1982, he became assistant superintendent of the slab mill/hot strip mill/cold mill, and three years later was promoted to superintendent of the galvanized products division at Lackawanna.

    He was transferred to Sparrows Point in 1988 as manager, maintenance and technical services and, in 1991, was named senior manager at Bethlehem's Burns Harbor, Ind., plant. Mr. Johnson returned to Sparrows Point one year later when he was promoted to vice president and general manager of the plant. In 1993, when the corporation formed separate business units, he was named vice president of operations for the Sparrows Point Division. He was elected president January 1, 1999.

    Mr. Johnson and his wife, Kristine, are the parents of three grown children. They reside in Severna Park, Md.

    Van R. Reiner

    Mr. Reiner, a native of Lakewood, Ohio, holds a bachelor's degree in chemistry from Wittenberg University and a master's degree in chemistry from Lehigh University. He also has completed executive education programs at Duke University and the Wharton School of Business at the University of Pennsylvania.

    He joined Bethlehem Steel in 1974 and spent the first 10 years of his career as an engineer in the coke oven department at Bethlehem's Lackawanna, N.Y., plant. In 1984, he was transferred to the Burns Harbor, Ind., Division as assistant superintendent of cokemaking operations. Four years later, he was named assistant superintendent of the slab mill/plate mills department and in 1990 was promoted to superintendent of that department.

    In 1995, Mr. Reiner was appointed superintendent of the Galvanized Products Division, an operating unit of Burns Harbor located at Lackawanna. He became senior manager, operations, for the Burns Harbor Division in 1997, and president, Bethlehem Lukens Plate, when that division was formed in May 1998 following Bethlehem's acquisition of Lukens Inc.

    Professionally, Mr. Reiner is a member of the board of directors of the American Institute of Steel Construction. He also holds memberships in the Association of Iron and Steel Engineers, American Chemical Society, Western States Blast Furnace and Coke Oven Operators Association and the Association of Women in the Metals Industry.

    In the community, Mr. Reiner is a director of the Chester County, Pa., Chamber of Business and Industry and the United Way of Chester County.

    He and his wife, Shirley, are the parents of three children. They reside in West Chester, Pa.
