    For Immediate Release

BETHLEHEM, Pa., January 17, 2000 - Bethlehem Steel Corporation recently received two significant recognitions relating to its procurement and supply chain activities.

For the second consecutive year, Bethlehem Steel's Purchasing Department has been selected by Purchasing Magazine as being among the "best places to work" for purchasing professionals in the American business community.

A total of five corporate purchasing departments were chosen by the magazine for the special recognition this year, but only Bethlehem Steel was selected for the second year in a row. Others named were Ashland, Inc.; Donnelly Corp.; Fisher-Rosemount Systems; and Honeywell Industrial Automation Control.

Among the criteria used by Purchasing Magazine were:

    • Training opportunities at three levels: entry, managerial and executive
    • Opportunities for advancement
    • Annual turnover rate
    • Involvement and interaction with other functional groups
    • Influence in major corporate decisions
    • Compensation
    • And, other areas of job satisfaction

In a separate, significant recognition of Bethlehem Steel's purchasing and supply chain process, the steel company was ranked in the top quartile in a global "Assessment of Excellence" by the A. T. Kearney consulting firm. This benchmarking study involved 161 other companies in North and South America, Europe and the Asia-Pacific region.

Bethlehem was highly ranked in nearly every dimension in the global assessment, which includes Procurement Strategy, Organizational Alignment, Sourcing, Supplier Relationship Management, Operating Process Management, Performance Management, Knowledge/Information Management, and Human Resources Management.

"These special recognitions," said Curtis H. "Hank" Barnette, Bethlehem's Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, "confirm that we have the right procurement strategy, excellent processes, first-rate working environment, and outstanding people, all of which will serve us well in helping to deliver improved performance for our stockholders."
