Dr. A. E. Moffitt, Jr. elected Executive Vice President and Chief Administrative Officer

    BETHLEHEM, Pa., February 1, 2000 -- The election, effective today, of Dr. Augustine E. Moffitt, Jr., to executive vice president and chief administrative officer, Bethlehem Steel Corporation, was announced today by Curtis H. Barnette, chairman and chief executive officer.

    Dr. Moffitt will report to Mr. Barnette until April 25, 2000 and to Duane R. Dunham after Mr. Barnette�s retirement.  Mr. Dunham�s election as chairman, president and chief executive officer, effective April 25, 2000, was previously announced.

    Dr. Moffitt currently serves as senior vice president and chief administrative officer.

    In his new capacity, he will continue to serve as a member of Bethlehem�s Executive Office Staff and will be responsible for human resources, union relations, compensation and benefit services, safety, health and environment, and administrative services functions.

    A native of Minersville, Pa., Dr. Moffitt received a bachelor of science degree, cum laude, in chemistry from LaSalle College and received a master of science degree in 1969 and a doctor of science degree in 1972, both from Harvard University.  He attended The University of Michigan�s Human Resources Executive Program in 1990 and is a 1996 graduate of the Harvard Business School�s Advanced Management Program.

    Before joining Bethlehem in 1973, Dr. Moffitt worked with the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health at its Cincinnati, Ohio, office and previously served as a commissioned officer in the U.S. Public Health Service. Upon joining Bethlehem, Dr. Moffitt worked in environmental health and safety before he was named manager of human resources at the former Bethlehem Structural Products Division with responsibility for personnel and employment matters, union relations, environmental, safety and health, industrial engineering, salary administration, and human resources planning and development.

    Dr. Moffitt was elected vice president, safety, health and environment for Bethlehem Steel, effective March 1, 1994.  He was elected senior vice president and chief administrative officer and became a member of Bethlehem�s Executive Office Staff, effective January 1, 1998.

    Dr. Moffitt serves as chairman of Bethlehem�s Employee Benefits Administration Committee and the Corporate Safety, Health and Environment Council. He is also a member of the Pension Trust Investment Committee and the Bethlehem Steel Foundation Board of Directors.

    Professionally, Dr. Moffitt is chairman of the environmental affairs committee of the International Iron and Steel Institute and a member of the Board of Directors of the National Safety Council. He also serves on the Governing Board of the Institute for Career Development.

    He is a member of the board of trustees of the Lehigh Valley Health Network, Inc., and the Muhlenberg Hospital Center.  He also serves on the board of directors of the Lehigh Valley Business-Education Partnership.

    Dr. Moffitt and his wife, Joanne, are the parents of two adult children. They reside in Hanover Township.
