BETHLEHEM, Pa., April 13, 2000 -- The appointment of Stephen J. Selden to deputy general counsel of Bethlehem Steel Corporation was announced here today by William H. Graham, Bethlehem's general counsel.

Mr. Selden will continue to lead the corporate law group, and his current responsibilities include strategic initiatives, acquisitions and divestitures, corporate financings, utility regulation, joint ventures and general corporate law.

A native of West Hartford, Conn., Mr. Selden graduated from Duke University in 1966 with a bachelor of arts degree in literature. He served with the U. S. Naval Security Service in Taipei, Taiwan, from 1966 to 1968. Following military service, he earned a doctor of jurisprudence degree from Boston University in 1972. In 1980, he was awarded a master of laws degree in taxation, also from Boston University.

Prior to joining Bethlehem Steel Corporation as an attorney in 1980, Mr. Selden was a partner with the law firm of McLane, Graf, Raulerson & Middleton in Manchester, N.H. He was promoted to assistant general counsel in 1994.

Mr. Selden is a member of the American, New Hampshire, Pennsylvania and Northampton County bar associations. He has served on the American Bar Associations Negotiated Acquisitions Committee and is a member of the Section of Business Law as well as the Public Utility Law and International Law Sections.

Active in alumni affairs, Mr. Selden is a member of the Duke University Alumni Admissions Advisory Council and the Boston University School of Law mentor program.

He and his wife, Jane, are the parents of two adult sons. They reside in Bethlehem.
