BETHLEHEM, Pa., October 12, 1999 -- In conjunction with the corporate Excellence in Environmental Achievement Awards announced by Bethlehem Steel Corporation, the $2,500 Bethlehem Steel Foundation grants that accompanied the awards have been designated by the winning teams to the following non-profit and environmentally concerned community programs:
Bethlehem Works (Site Assessment and Remediation Team) award to Historic Bethlehem Partnership, Bethlehem, Pa., for environmental and economic development of Main Street area, particularly The Forge of Historic Bethlehem, Inc.
Burns Harbor, Ind., (Community Advisory Committee Team) award to the Indiana Dunes Environmental Learning Center, Chesterton, Ind., for support of environmental education.
Burns Harbor (BOF North and South Title V Teams) award to the Porter County Parks Foundation, Inc., Valparaiso, Ind., for the continued development of Sunset Hill County Park.
Bethlehem Lukens Plate, Coatesville, Pa., (Oil and Hazardous Substance Containment Team) award to the Stroud Water Research Center Trust, Avondale, Pa., for the support of regional environmental programs.
Pennsylvania Steel Technologies (Maintenance Services and Utilities System Team) award to the Steelton, Pa., Community Development Foundation for tree planting, development of a community park, and initiation of a community environmental task group.
And, Sparrows Point, Md., (Coke Oven Wastewater Bio-Oxidation Pond Conversion Team) award to Dundalk, Md., High School for support of environmental education.
In addition, Bethlehem Steel announced the designation of a special award and acknowledgement this year in memory of the late Dr. Daniel Kwasnoski, a Bethlehem Steel environmental engineer. The $2,000 scholarship will be presented to Lehigh University graduate student, Daniel W. Elliott, who is pursuing a Ph.D. in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at P.C. Rossin College of Engineering and Applied Science.
