BETHLEHEM, Pa., July 6, 1999 -- In the event of query from the media on the impact on Bethlehem Steel from the takeover of Conrail by the Norfolk & Southern and CSX railroads, the following may be used:

"Bethlehem Steel recognizes the difficulties that are associated with a railroad reorganization of this magnitude and we are in almost daily contact with both the Norfolk & Southern and CSX to lessen the impact on our customers and to maintain shipments of materials to our various operations. At the same time, we are working closely with our steel customers who would normally receive product shipments via rail to arrange, when necessary, for alternate types of transportation.
