BETHLEHEM, Pa., April 13, 1999 -- Bethlehem Steel Corporation confirmed today that it has reached an agreement of terms and conditions for the sale of about 65 acres of land to the Susquehanna Area Regional Airport Authority (SARAA). The agreement was approved today by SARAA's board of directors. The parties expect to close the transaction within the next 90 days as stipulated by the agreement.
The parcel of land, which has been owned by Bethlehem Steel since 1967, is located on the east side of the Pennsylvania Turnpike near the airport in the Borough of Highspire and Lower Swatara Township. The property was formerly used for the storage of pipe products from Bethlehem Steel's Pennsylvania Steel Technologies subsidiary in Steelton. The property was investigated under the regulatory provisions of Act 2, Pennsylvania's landmark brownfields legislation, and in March 1998 received final clearance from the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection.
The property, deemed surplus by Bethlehem Steel, has been actively marketed since the mid 1990s.
