BETHLEHEM, Pa., October 28, 1998 -- Dr. Augustine E. Moffitt Jr., senior vice president and chief administrative officer, Bethlehem Steel Corporation, has been elected to the board of directors of the National Safety Council for a two-year term.

In his current position with Bethlehem Steel, Dr. Moffitt is responsible for employee-related areas, including human resources, safety and industrial health. He most recently served as vice president, safety, health and environment, and previously was manager, human resources, for the Bethlehem, Pa., plant operations.

Dr. Moffitt holds a bachelor's degree in chemistry from LaSalle College and a master of science and doctor of science degrees, both from Harvard University. He attended the Advanced Management Program at Harvard Business School in 1996. Prior to joining Bethlehem Steel in 1973, Dr. Moffitt worked for the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health.
