Carl Johnson Elected President, Sparrows Point Division

BETHLEHEM, Pa., October 28, 1998 -- The election, effective January 1, 1999, of Carl W. Johnson to president, Sparrows Point Division, Bethlehem Steel Corporation, was announced today by Curtis H. Barnette, chairman and chief executive officer.

Mr. Johnson currently serves as vice president of operations for the Sparrows Point Division. He is succeeding Duane R. Dunham, whose promotion to executive vice president, commercial and business development, in Bethlehem's corporate office was also announced today.

A native of Springfield, Mass., Mr. Johnson earned a bachelor of science degree in mechanical engineering from the University of Massachusetts. He joined Bethlehem Steel in 1963 as a member of that year's Loop Course management training program and was assigned to the Lackawanna, N. Y., plant.

Initially employed in the mechanical department of the plant's hot strip mill, Mr. Johnson advanced to master mechanic in that operation before being named assistant superintendent of the plant's mechanical department in 1976.

In 1982, Mr. Johnson became assistant superintendent of the slab mill/hot strip mill/

cold mill and three years later was promoted to superintendent of the Galvanized Products Division at Lackawanna. He was transferred to Sparrows Point in 1988 as manager, maintenance and technical services, and, in 1991, was named senior manager at Bethlehem's Burns Harbor, Ind., plant.

Mr. Johnson returned to Sparrows Point one year later when he was promoted to vice president and general manager of the plant. In 1993, when the corporation formed separate business units, he was named vice president of operations for the Sparrows Point Division.

Mr. Johnson and his wife, Kristine, are the parents of three grown children. They reside in Severna Park, Md.
