BETHLEHEM, Pa., October 30, 1998 -- The retirement, effective January 31, 1999, of Robert J. Carle as Bethlehem Steel Corporation's general manager, marketing, has been announced by David P. Post, senior vice president, commercial.

A native of West Orange, N. J., Mr. Carle was graduated in 1957 from Newark College of Engineering with a bachelor of science degree in civil engineering. He received his master of science degree in civil engineering from Lehigh University in 1959.

Mr. Carle joined Bethlehem Steel that same year through the Loop Course management training program and was assigned to piling sales. In 1961, he was named salesman for piling products, and three years later he became a sales engineer, piling sales.

In 1968, Mr. Carle was advanced to assistant manager in reinforcing bar, piling and construction specialty sales and was named product line manager, structural shapes and piling, in 1985. He was named manager, product applications, in 1990 and manager, coated sheet products marketing, in 1991. He was promoted to his current position in February 1993.

Mr. Carle, a licensed professional engineer in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, resides in Bethlehem with his wife, Shirley. They are the parents of two daughters.
