BETHLEHEM, Pa., June 17, 1998 -- Curtis H. Barnette, chairman and chief executive officer of Bethlehem Steel Corporation, today announced the election to the corporation's board of directors of William M. Landuyt, chairman and chief executive officer, Millennium Chemicals Inc., Red Bank, N.J.
"We are pleased to welcome Bill Landuyt to Bethlehem's board of directors. His extensive experience in manufacturing, finance and strategic growth management will make him a valuable asset to our company," Mr. Barnette said.
Millennium Chemicals Inc. (NYSE - MCH) is a major international chemicals company, with leading market positions in a broad range of commodity, industrial, performance and specialty chemicals.
With this election, Bethlehem's board is composed of three officer directors and 10 non-officer directors.
Mr. Landuyt was born in Evergreen Park, Ill., and received a bachelor of business administration degree in accounting from the University of Notre Dame in 1977. Following graduation, he began work at Price Waterhouse's Small Business Department, reaching senior manager level before joining Hanson Industries in June 1983 as assistant treasurer.
While with Hanson Industries, Mr. Landuyt was promoted to controller in December 1983, vice president of finance in 1987, and vice president and chief financial officer in 1988. He was appointed associate director of Hanson PLC in 1990 and joined the board as finance director in 1992. Mr. Landuyt was named president and chief executive officer of Hanson Industries in 1995 and became chairman and chief executive officer of Millennium Chemicals Inc. in 1996 following Millennium's demerger from Hanson PLC.
Mr. Landuyt is a member of the board of directors of the Chemical Marketing Association and the National Association of Manufacturers.
