BETHLEHEM, Pa., January 15, 1998 -- In response to questions, Bethlehem Steel confirmed that on December 15, 1997, President Clinton announced his intention to appoint Curtis H. Barnette, chairman and chief executive officer, Bethlehem Steel Corporation, and others to the Advisory Committee for Trade Policy and Negotiations.

The President's Trade Advisory Committee is responsible for providing overall advice on trade policy matters of the United States. It is composed of the chief executives of leading U.S. corporations and other organizations. Staff and administrative support for the committee is provided by the Office of the United States Trade Representative.

Mr. Barnette has been a member of the Advisory Committee since 1989 when he was appointed by President Bush. He was reappointed by President Bush in 1991 and then by President Clinton in 1994.

Others to be appointed by the President, in addition to Mr. Barnette, include:

George R. Ariyoshi, an international business consultant and former Governor of Hawaii; Robert J. Eaton, Chairman, Chrysler Corporation; George Fisher, Chairman, Eastman Kodak Company; D. George Harris, Chairman, Harris Chemical Group; Dean R. Kleckner, President, American Farm Bureau Federation; J. Bruce Llewellyn, Chairman, Philadelphia Coca-Cola Bottling Company; Lewis E. Platt, Chairman, Hewlett-Packard Company, and Jeanette Sarkisian Wagner, President, Estee Lauder International Inc.
