BETHLEHEM, Pa., October 7, 1997 -- Bethlehem Steel Corporation said today it has sold its HPM coal mining operation in Nicholas County, W.Va., to Power Mountain Coal Company, a subsidiary of A.T. Massey Coal Company, Inc.

Terms of the transaction were not disclosed.

High Power Mountain, which shipped its first coal in October 1985, had supplied low-sulfur steam coal to the power generation industry. Bethlehem Steel said the sale of the facility is a continuation of its overall corporate strategy of concentrating on its principal steelmaking divisions to increase their competitiveness and achieve Bethlehem's vision of being the premier steel company.
