BETHLEHEM, Pa., August 21, 1997 -- In response to media inquiries regarding the status of labor negotiations in the sale of its BethForge and CENTEC businesses to the West Homestead Engineering and Machinery Company (WHEMCO) group of companies, Bethlehem Steel Corporation said:

"The negotiations are between WHEMCO and the United Steelworkers of America, and Bethlehem has no additional comment. We are disappointed that an agreement has not been reached."
