Prepainted
Galvalume sheet roof establishes strong focal point for
recreation center.
Vistana Resort, located in Orland, Florida near Disney
World, is one of the nation's largest and most successful
vacation ownership resorts.
The Vistana Fountains Recreation Center was completed
in 1990. It is one of four recreational facilites
offering the Resort's vaction owners and rental guests a
variety of activities, including swimming, outdoor hot
tubs, volleyball, shuffleboard, a children's playground,
a health/fitness area and a fitness room with exercise
equipment.
The design of the Center was influenced by Florida's
historic cracker-style architecture, which made use of
stucco walls and metal roofing. A design objective was to
establish the Center's roof as a strong focal point in
relation to the surrounding shingle-roofed structures in
the complex. In addition, the roofing system had to fit
within the allotted building budget. The metal roofing
system selected not only statisfied the budget and
aesthetics requirements, but it also reinforced the
Center's location as the activities center for that area
of the Resort.
Design criteria: scale, color and durability
Scale was an important factor in the overall design of
the project. Insofar as the roof was concerned, elevation
drawings helped determine what the proper spacing and
size of the seams should be for the architectural
standing seam panels.
The stucco-walled building is topped with an
architectural standing seam roof manufactured by MBCI,
Houston, TX. Approximately, 15,600 sq ft of MBCI's
Craftsman Series SB12, 24-gage prepainted Galvalume sheet
roofing panels finished in Duranar XL Copper Metallic
were applied.
The designer liked the Duranar paint system, not only
for its color, but also for its guarantee against fade
and good resistance to ultraviolet light. This was a
primary concern because of the roof's heavy exposure to
sunlight in this area. Resistance to moisture was also a
concern. The combination of the Galvalume coating and the
paint system provides extra protection against
degradation of the panel due to moisture.
MBCI's Craftsman Series SB12 panel system was
installed over a 1-inch plywood deck and 30# felt paper.
The architect and owner believe that the use of the extra
thick 1-inch plywood backing results in a better looking
roof because it provides more uniform support of the
panel system.
Wind was also a concern
Although Vistana Resort is not located along the
coast, high winds are still a major concern. The roofing
system selected had to be able to withstand the 120 mph
uplift rating of central Florida. MBCI's SB12 roofing has
a UL90 rating which enables it to not only meet, but
exceed the wind load requirement specified.
Many color options available
Prepainted Galvalume sheet from Bethlehem is available
in a wide variety of colors and finishes. Bethlehem's
process specification program insures that the prepainted
Galvalume sheet is produced to prescribed standards. The
program specifies methods and materials to be used in
each phase of the painting process.
The painting process specification includes
corrosion-resistant chemical pretreatments, specially
formulated, high-performance primers and numerous
durable, attractive finishes including polyesters,
silicone polyesters and fluorocarbons. Each of the paint
systems is formulated to provide superior long-term
performance at sheared edges, as well as at flat, formed
and paint-damaged areeas.
Galvalume sheet warranty another plus
The architect also believes strongly in the importance
of selecting material and roofing system manufacturers on
the basis of reputation and credibility. They want to
work with reputable manufacturers who offer recognized
finishes. Both Bethlehem and MBCI satisfy this
requirement.
Shortly after Bethlehem introduced Galvalume sheet to
the market in the early 1970s, it offered customers the
choice of a warranty on the base metal. It states that
the substrate will not rupture, fail structurally, or
perforate due to corrosion for a period of 20 years, 6
months. Standard paint warranties are also available. The
warranties are contingent on the material being used in
accordance with the manufacturer's instructions. Contact
Bethlehem for more information on the Galvalume warranty.
The Recreation Center is actually the third building
at Vistana Resort to use a prepainted Galvalume sheet
roofing system. A smaller, earlier built recreation
center and the resort's new Reception Center are also
topped with MBCI's Craftsman Series SB12 panel system.
The Reception Center's roofing panels are finished with a
Natural Patina-colored Duranar/Kynar 500 paint system.
Like the Recreation Center, the panels were installed
over a 5/8-inch plywood deck and 30# felt paper. Both
roofing systems were installed by Quality Metals, Inc.,
Winter Park, FL.
