Since 1946, Bethlehem Steel Corporation has had a formal program of environmental control. We were one of the first industrial companies in the United States to recognize our obligation to our communities, their citizens and our environment, and that tradition is alive and well today.
This report charts the significant progress we have made in the past few years and sets the stage for our continuing efforts through employee awareness and innovative technologies. We want all of our stakeholders--employees, stockholders, neighbors, customers, suppliers and government officials--to know of our commitment to environmental excellence and the philosophy behind our actions as stated in our corporate environmental policy.
"We will comply with all environmental laws and regulations applicable to the conduct of our business. As a good corporate citizen, we are dedicated to the continuous improvement of the environment in which we all live."
That policy underscores one of our corporate objectives, as listed on the back cover of this report, of being a good corporate citizen. To achieve that objective, we have developed an environmental philosophy that allows us to responsibly operate our facilities. We proactively approach our responsibilities through training our employees, increasing awareness by employees of our impact on the environment and abiding by the local, state and federal regulations affecting our business. We are proud of our continuing progress.
Consistent with our corporate vision to be the premier steel company and our environmental policy and objectives, Bethlehem Steel became the first steel maker to endorse the CERES principles, a comprehensive environmental code of conduct, in September 1995. This action commits us to continuous improvement in, and public accountability for our environmental performance.
People and technology working together are critical to all aspects of our business. The partnership has helped Bethlehem Steel respond proactively to environmental issues and will help us achieve our objective of being a good corporate citizen and a resident business of choice in the communities in which we operate.
Although we are proud of our accomplishments in the past few years, we realize that we must continue our work to protect and preserve the environment. Continuous improvement in environmental protection is an integral part of doing business today, and we -- all 18,000 Bethlehem Steel employees -- commit to environmental excellence through our actions and the best use of our technology.
