1997/98 Environmental Progress Report
Company Profile |
|
Bethlehem Steel Corporation is the second largest integrated steel
producer in the United States, with an annual raw steel production capacity of 11.5
million tons. Bethlehem employs about 17,000 people in plants located on the east coast
and in the midwest. Today Bethlehems basic steel operations include four main
business units:
- Burns Harbor Division (including Lackawanna Coke and Galvanized Products
Divisions) (BH)
- Sparrows Point Division (SP)
- Bethlehem Lukens Plate (BLP)
- Pennsylvania Steel Technologies, Inc. (PST)
These business units produce a wide variety of steel mill products including hot
rolled, cold rolled and coated sheets and strip, plates, tin mill products, specialty
blooms, flat bars, rail and large-diameter pipe.
Bethlehem Lukens Plate was formed in the spring of 1998 with Bethlehems
acquisition of Lukens Inc. BLP brings together plate production facilities at the former
Lukens Coatesville and Conshohocken, Pa., plants, two plate mills at the Burns
Harbor Division, and a plate mill at Sparrows Point. Other Lukens assets are being
divested. The acquisition of Lukens added about one million tons of raw steel production
capacity to Bethlehem Steels capacity.
Also included in Basic Steel Operations are iron ore operations, subsidiary railroad
and trucking operations, and lake shipping operations. Bethlehem also participates in
several joint ventures for flat-rolled products.
