Design Considerations
In its bare, mature state, Weathering Steel has a unique, natural oxide coating-about the same thickness as a heavy coat of paint. The coating is dense, tightly adherent, and relatively impervious to further atmospheric corrosion. Minor damage to this oxide coating heals itself, therefore, maintenance is greatly reduced.

Bare Weathering Steel is suitable for many atmospheric environments, including moderate industrial and some marine exposures.

Bare Weathering Steel is compatible with other construction materials such as brick, stone, and wood when appropriate details are incorporated in the design.

Weathering Steel has other advantages as well. Its yield strength-Weathering Steel is now available with yield strength-Weathering Steel is now available with yield strengths of 50 ksi, 70 ksi and 100 ksi-allows designs with relatively light sections. Combined with the fact that little or no initial painting or subsequent repainting is required. Weathering Steel results in significant first cost and life cycle cost savings.
