Cold-Rolled and Coated Sheet Products (pg. 6)

The Cold-Rolled and Coated Sheet Products Division conducts research in both product and process areas. The work is primarily directed at the development of new cold-rolled and coated sheet products, improvement of existing products, improvement to sheet finishing processes and the development of instrument and control systems to insure product quality and process efficiency. The Division works closely with the steel plants in identifying new market opportunities and process improvement opportunities. The Division has four groups:

  • Cold-Rolled and Coated Process Development — conducts research programs to develop and implement new and improved technology to upgrade and optimize cold rolling and coating processes.
  • Cold-Rolled Products — has responsibility for product development and technical support for cold- rolled sheet products.
  • Hot-Dip Coated Products — conducts research aimed at developing new and improved hot-dip coating processes and products.
  • Electrogalvanized and Tin Mill Products — conducts research to enhance zinc and zinc-nickel galvanizing, tin plating and chrome coating processes and develop an improved electroplated sheet product for automotive, container and other markets.

The Hot-Dip Coating Pilot Line has the capability to process ” wide strip at a maximum speed of 185 fpm. The line has been used for projects on galvanizing, Galvalume and new product development.

The Hot-Dip Coating Simulator provides a controlled atmosphere for annealing, coating, wiping and induction heating for new hot-dip product development.
