Burns Harbor: Built to be America's most efficient, quality engineered steelmaking facility

From its very beginning in 1962, Bethlehem Steel's Burns Harbor Division was planned and built to be the finest integrated steel plant in America. Every phase of the steelmaking process, from raw material handling through finished product, is closely controlled. Quality is built into each operation. The plant layout ensures maximum efficiency; west-to-east material flow eliminates backtracking and minimizes material handling cost.

Superior sheet starts with the best steelmaking

From start to finish, Burns Harbor sets industry standards in steelmaking quality, consistency and chemistry control

To produce finished sheet products with superior internal properties, surface quality and formability, it is essential to start with clean steel with tightly controlled chemistry. The three basic oxygen furnaces at Burns Harbor use a sophisticated, computer-controlled process to convert molten iron into steel. Through controlled processes and testing, steel chemistry is rigidly balanced to meet exact specifications for sheet production.

Computerized ladle treatment and desulfurization produce steel with superior cleanliness, surface quality and formability

Ladle treatments and desulfurization are further examples of the technology being used at Burns Harbor to produce a cleaner steel with improved properties. A desulfurization station removes sulfur from the hot metal, reducing inclusions that impair formability. Computerized ladle metallurgical treatment accurately matches liquid steel chemistry to specific customer requirements.

Continuous casting produces internally clean slabs with excellent surface qualities

Basic oxygen furnaces and the ladle treatment station make quality steel with precise chemistry

Putting the most advanced technology in the hands of the most experienced people

Computer-controlled processing is designed into every stage of steelmaking

Today's steels are highly complex products that are quality engineered for specific end uses.

Advanced computer technology has been integrated into all Burns Harbor operations to assure maximum control and consistency in steel chemistry, dimensional accuracy and surface quality.

Hot-Rolled

Computerized heating control produces superior hot-rolled product with extreme flatness and uniform properties.

Coil and cut lengths
Thickness: .061 min. to .500 inch
Width: 25-1/2 to 74 inches
Pickled and oiled and non-pickled
Mill edge or cut edge
Temper passed and non-temper passed

Drawing quality through high strength

The Burns Harbor 80-inch hot-strip mill is modern and productive, rolling bands with superior properties and consistency over a wide range of applications.

An industry leader in surface quality and gauge control

Each stage of the rolling process is controlled automatically, using sophisticated computer technology to monitor and control sheet thickness to ensure consistency and accuracy in meeting customer specifications.

Cut-to-length sheets are temper passed for extreme flatness

To give customers a higher level of performance, all cut lengths are temper passed, then roller leveled after shearing. This produces a finished sheet with excellent flatness and surface.

Surface finish for improved paintability

Burns Harbor temper rolling imparts a superior finish to coils and cut lengths, for improved surface appearance and paintability.

Technology advancement at Burns Harbor is a continual process

Burns Harbor is continually adding the latest technology to its mill operations to stay on the cutting edge of today's customer needs and provide for the future. Bethlehem continues to invest millions of dollars in the hot mill to further improve sheet dimensional accuracy, physical properties and surface quality. Planned improvements include Hydraulic Automatic Gauge Control, and Laser Feedback Roll Bending.

Wide range of applications

Demand for Burns Harbor hot-rolled products continues to grow as more and more customers discover the superior performance and wide choices available in today's steel. We supply hot-rolled products for many end-use applications, including agricultural equipment, tubing, mower decks, wheel rims, water heaters, electrical panels, metal buildings and automotive parts.

Cold-Rolled

Highly trained people, second-generation computerization and closed-loop control make Burns Harbor a leader in producing cold-rolled sheet to exact customer requirements.

Thickness: .022 to .117 inch
Width: 24-5/8 to 73 inches
CQ to EDDQ
Yield strengths to 100,000 psi

Burns Harbor cold-rolled sheet is an industry leader in flatness, surface quality, controlled chemistry, dimensional accuracy and overall consistency in mechanical properties. The 80-inch tandem mill maintains precise control of thickness and surface quality, using a unique, closed-loop system to automatically adjust the tension and speed of the strip passing through the mill, as well as the gap and force of the mill rolls. This produces cold-rolled sheet with a superior consistency that helps give customers a competitive edge in both performance and cost.

Wide range of sizes and grades

Cold-rolled sheet is available in a wide choice of sizes, strengths and grades for almost every customer need, from the most severe forming applications to 100,000 psi yield strength. We supply cold-rolled products for many end-use applications, including appliances, containers, office furniture, tubing, automotive parts, bicycles and water heaters.

Choice of finishes, including texturized

A selection of surface finishes is also available, including a leather-grained texturized surface ideal for appliances.

Continuous heat treating improves steel surface cleanliness and mechanical properties

Burns Harbor is one of the few steel producers in the USA that incorporates a continuous heat treating line (CHTL) into its process. This produces high-strength and commercial-quality steel with excellent uniformity of mechanical properties, surface cleanliness and predictable formability.

Coated Products

Three world-class coating lines give customers an extensive choice of coated sheet, with outstanding formability, coating thickness consistency and weldability.

Hot-dip galvanized
Galvannealed
Electrogalvanized
Zinc-nickel and organic coatings
Thickness: 0.022 to 0.160 inch
Width: 24 to 72 inches

Serving customers worldwide

The variety of Burns Harbor coated sheet offers customers the right choice for applications in a wide range of yield strengths and grades.

Two hot-dip coating lines produce world-class steel sheet

The 72-inch hot-dip coating lines at Burns Harbor and Lackawanna, N.Y., produce spangle-free galvanized and galvannealed sheet with improved surface quality, paintability, corrosion protection, weldability and formability. Both lines feature integral closed-loop coating mass control systems that represent the latest technology in achieving precise coating weight uniformity and alloy layer control. Hot-dip coated sheet is available with extra-smooth finish on request.

The 72-inch electrogalvanizing line offers a wide range of corrosion-resistant steels for critical surface applications

This line, located in Walbridge, Ohio, produces a full range of corrosion-resistant sheet electroplated on one or both sides, or with a different coating mass on each side as required. The products include EG sheet and Zinc-Nickel EG sheet, plus Zinc-Nickel UC sheet, which adds a composite organic coating as an additional corrosion barrier.

Environmentally ... Burns Harbor is what a steel plant should be

Bordered on two sides by a national park, Burns Harbor has proved that industry and nature can live in harmony. For example, Burns Harbor is so effective in treating the millions of gallons of water used at the plant each day that boating and fishing thrive in the stream through which the treated water passes on its way back to Lake Michigan. Burns Harbor also protects the air through the use of high-energy wet scrubbers and baghouses and has designed and constructed an innovative solid waste recycling system that significantly reduces landfill disposal.

Burns Harbor is committed to improving and protecting the environment - now, and in the future. It's a commitment without compromise.
