BETHLEHEM, Pa., October 8, 1999 -- The subsidiary railroads of Bethlehem Steel Corporation have been recognized for outstanding safety performance by the American Short Line and Regional Railroad Association (AMSLRRA).
The Patapsco & Back Rivers Railroad received the top honor, the gold award, in the category for 501,000 hours or more of work. The P&BR provides switching and terminal services at Bethlehem's Sparrows Point, Md., Division near Baltimore.
The Steelton & Highspire Railroad received a copper award in the category of 51,000 to 200,000 hours worked. The S&H services Bethlehem's Pennsylvania Steel Technologies Division in Steelton, Pa.
"Bethlehem's subsidiary railroads have consistently been among the safest short line railroads in the country," said J. Michael Zaia, president, subsidiary railroads, Bethlehem Steel. "Our safety performance speaks to our embracing safety as an everyday value and way of life."
Also honored by the AMSLRRA were the Conemaugh & Black Lick Railroad and the Philadelphia, Bethlehem & New England Railroad for working in 1998 with no accidents or injuries. The C&BL provides switching and terminal services to customers on the site of Bethlehem Steel's former Johnstown, Pa., property. The PB&NE serves customers at Bethlehem Steel's Bethlehem, Pa., property.
Bethlehem Steel Corporation owns seven shortline railroads that perform switching and terminal services for its operations in Indiana, Maryland, Pennsylvania and New York. The railroads are expanding their services to include intermodal facilities in strategic locations, including a terminal in Bethlehem, Pa., being used by Norfolk Southern.
