BETHLEHEM, Pa., November 5, 1998 -- The appointment, effective November 1, 1998, of John D. Cummings, Jr. to vice president, corporate sales, Bethlehem Steel Corporation, has been announced by Curtis H. Barnette, chairman and chief executive officer.

"This new position has been established to meet the changing demands of our customers and our organization," Mr. Barnette said.

Mr. Cummings will be responsible for the management of certain national accounts supplied by Bethlehem's major operating divisions. He will also provide administrative leadership to the field sales organization in the areas of training, development, deployment and succession.

Mr. Cummings will report to David P. Post, senior vice president and chief commercial officer, until Mr. Post's retirement late this year, and then will report to Duane R. Dunham, whose election as executive vice president, commercial and business development, effective January 1, 1999, was previously announced. Mr. Cummings advances from the position of general manager of sales, which he has held since February 1995.

A native of Bethlehem, Pa., Mr. Cummings holds a bachelor of science degree in metallurgical engineering from the University of Missouri. He joined Bethlehem in 1974 and was assigned to the Atlanta sales district until 1981 when he was transferred to Chattanooga, Tenn., as resident salesman.

Mr. Cummings relocated to Bethlehem, Pa., in 1983 as a product specialist in plate marketing. He was named area manager in coated and hot and cold rolled sheet product marketing in 1986.

Promoted to district manager of the Baltimore sales office in 1988, he was transferred to the Sparrows Point Division in 1993 as manager of hot and cold rolled sheet marketing.

He completed the University of Michigan's Executive Program earlier this year.

Mr. Cummings who is married and the father of four children resides in Towson, Md.
