DUNDALK, Md., Nov. 27, 1996 - In their first cooperative effort, two of Baltimore's largest labor unions are joining forces today to fight hunger in Maryland. The United Steelworkers of America (USWA) and the United Auto Workers (UAW) have teamed up to work for the Harvest For the Hungry campaign, said Donald E. Kellner, a drive co-chairman and president of Local 2609, USWA.

Mr. Kellner, who works at Bethlehem Steel, said Charles Alfred, president of Local 239 - General Motors, indicated the UAW will cooperate in the drive by seeking donations of money at the Broening Highway plant gates and in collecting food. The Thanksgiving gate collections begin today at General Motors and Bethlehem's Sparrows Point facilities.

"Our biggest revenue producers are the two annual gate collections at Bethlehem's Sparrows Point plant and at BethShip, yielding between $10-12,000," Mr. Kellner said, "so adding gate collections at General Motors-Broening Highway, where there are 3,500 employees, can help our campaign enormously," Bethlehem Steel has 5,300 employees at the steel plant and 300 at BethShip-Sparrows Point Yard.

The Thanksgiving gate collection was scheduled for Wednesday, Nov. 27, and the Christmas collection will be held Wednesday, Dec. 18.

Both the USWA and UAW will be involved at the WBAL-TV Food-A-Thon on Saturday, Dec. 7, at Local 2609 Hall on Dundalk Avenue. Mr. Kellner said people can drop food off at the hall from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m., have refreshments and meet Mr. and Mrs. Santa Claus and several clowns.

That night, the two unions will join Dundalk Community College in hosting the United States Army Field Band and Soldiers Chorus beginning at 7 p.m. Admission to the program of patriotic and Christmas music will od c`nne g/ods anD odhez nkn-periqhacle oo$ iTems.M!in >a iref"http:o/wWw.ret`steel.gom-inwestr.(tml">INvectoz Ralationq Bsi.ess UnIts,/a6 Comieraiam Inor-ation<a>0 8a href?"hutp:/w7w.Bethsteul.kom+entironmeot.hmlb> envyronmen| >imf sr="dot.'if b&127rdmr=0 hemghv=5!widh=u>htel": Hkstory<.a> im' sRc=2dot.gin" forfer<0 hight="5`wiDth-5">4a href9"hvtp;//ww."ethsteEl.som'viwion.htol"?
