SPARROWS POINT, Md., Nov. 26, 1996 - Students of the Sparrows Point High School Environmental Science Program are the beneficiaries of a $2,000 grant from a team of workers who earned an award for containing an oil spill at the steel plant, it was announced today by Duane R. Dunham, president of Bethlehem Steel's Sparrows Point Division.
Bethlehem's 1996 Excellence In Environmental Award went to a group of Sparrows Point workers which, in turn, named the school as the recipient of the corresponding grant.
Employees of the steel firm's maintenance department and Mobile Dredging and Pumping Company, a contractor, worked successfully over a 24-hour period to prevent leaks of several hundred gallons of oil from reaching a tributary of the Chesapeake Bay. Leaks from two different oil pumps at the Pennwood power house were confined to the basement of the facility.
"The quick reaction of these people demonstrates the commitment to a clean environment on the part of everyone here," Mr. Dunham said. "This team went above and beyond the call of duty."
He said Bethlehem started the Excellence In Environmental Awards last year to honor employees who make significant contributions toward achieving Bethlehem's environmental policy and vision of being the premier steel company. "At the same time, the corresponding grants help non-profit groups support environmental activities in our communities," Mr. Dunham said.
Sparrows Point High School is attempting to become an environmental science magnet for students from around Baltimore County. The school's location near Chesapeake tributaries, state and county parks, and marshlands, has prompted a strong environmental science curriculum.
The first Bethlehem awards, made last year, went to three employee teams who named the Nature Conservancy, Chesapeake Wildlife Heritage, Inc., and the National Environmental Education and Training Foundation as recipients of grants of $2,000 each.
